Rests and Rhythmic Patterns: Silence Is Also Music

A rest doesn't mean the music has stopped; the beat continues, and sound simply takes a break.

Did you know · Even "silence" in music needs to be counted—rests mean "be quiet here, but keep the beat going."
Rests correspond one-to-one with notes (in 4/4 time, one beat = one quarter note): a quarter rest lasts for 1 beat, an eighth rest lasts for half a beat... The most common mistake for beginners is "rushing the rest." Click on the rests below to hear how long each "silence" lasts; then click on the rhythmic patterns (the beat keeps moving during the silence):

Practice Tip: When you rush a rest, don't stop the beat. Instead, vocalize the rest (count "empty" in your head). "Boom boom empty da-da" is easier to count accurately than just playing directly.
